Inside Look At CES 2016

From January 6th to January 9th the Consumer Electronic Show, the largest tech convention, took place in Las Vegas. This annual affair has become a staple in Vegas and has become the hub for technology enthusiasts. This annual event has been held in the Sin City for 38 years and continues to set new records. The venue was 2.4 million square feet and was taking place in various areas including the Las Vegas Convention Centre and notable casinos such as The Venetian, Cosmopolitan and Mandalay Bay. This article provides an inside look at the event.

I managed to arrive on January 7th for the second day and it was unlike anything I’ve seen before. Aside from the thousands of people in attendance, there were booths set-up from various companies from small to large and everything in between. The booths I personally visited and enjoyed on this day were LG, Samsung, Sony and SMS Audio among many others. Their booths were very inviting, interactive and they had some great products that I already use. Samsung had their latest gadgets on display including smartphones and smartwatches. They also displayed their ultra-thin, bezel-less televisions. It was interesting to see the different types of products they had to offer across their assorted categories.

That evening at The Venetian there was a live taping of the NBA on TNT featuring basketball analysts Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley. It was entertaining to not only watch the NBA on a Thursday, but to see them do it live. It was a great experience and some of the attendees, myself included, got the opportunity to meet and speak with the panel.

Another area that was of great interest for me was wearable technology. Popular names such as FitBit and Misfit presented their assortment of products. The most captivating was Under Armour, who introduced “Connected Fitness” in an effort to rival Nikes dominance in the industry. They also held a live talk and Q&A session with Mixed Martial Artist George St. Pierre. It was a candid conversation in which he was very introspective and honest. Wearable technology is definitely the future and it’s where the market is shifting towards so it’ll be interesting to see how Under Armour performs.

CES 2016 was successful and is now a part of the history books. To provide some clarity, there were more than 3,800 exhibitors and 170,000 professionals in attendance, 50,000 of which came from outside of the United States. This event has managed to achieve astounding results. You can watch a full recap of it here.

CES 2016 was an unforgettable experience, and I’ll definitely be making my return for next year, scheduled to take place January 5th to the 8th of 2017.

I’d like to give a special thank you to the city of Las Vegas for playing host to such a wonderful event and to the MGM Grand for your hospitality.
